![]() ![]() If you check the voltage at the bulb connectors you might find that the bulbs are not receiving a full 12V from the circuit due to the conductor size being too small for the cable run length. Even a cable run of a few metres for small cross-section conductors can produce significant voltage drops and this problem is demonstrated well on some vehicles where the headlights are not as bright as they could be. In low voltage systems cable length can have a significant impact on voltage drop. The difference is that voltage drop across a bulb (or other load) is useful as that's what makes it work, but voltage drop along cable and other passive parts of a circuit is not desirable as it's not a useful conversion of energy. Just as a bulb converts electrical energy into heat and light due to its resistance, and so induces a voltage drop, a copper conductor has resistance and will convert some of the energy it conducts, causing a voltage drop in the same way. In this case 0.5mm² (11A) cable would be appropriate.Īll elements of an electrical circuit have resistance, including electrical cable, which means that there will be energy loss in the form of voltage drop experienced along the length of the cable. This tells you that you could use a cable with a rating of 4.17A or above, however it is good practice not to design a circuit operating at the upper end of the cable's rating and so you should select a cable with some additional capacity. If we wanted to wire up a light that we know has a power rating of 50W, then using I = P/V the current draw would be 50W/12V = 4.17A. You might find it useful to read our Electrical Circuit Basics article for using the equation I = P/V where the following example is given: Although fuses are used in the circuit to protect the cable, the cable itself should be of an adequate rating to prevent this over-heating occurring under normal circumstances. If it is not capable then it is likely to result in the cable becoming hot and potentially catching fire. The following are some points you should consider when selecting cable for a particular application:Įach component or appliance connected to a circuit will have a current draw associated with its operation and it is important that the cable supplying power to these is capable of carrying the normally expected current, plus a margin of safety. This is the resistance of the conductor expressed in Ohms per metre ( W/m) and is important when determining voltage drop (see below)Īdditional specifications may include a working temperature range and resistance to certain chemicals such as acids, fuels, oils etc. This is the diameter including the insulation and usually expressed in mm. So 28/0.30 means that there are 28 strands, each with a diameter of 0.30mmĮxpressed in Amperes (Amps or A) and is the maximum continuous or 'working' current that the cable can safely carry. ![]() ![]() This can often lead to confusion so just remember that the main specification for a cable will be its conductor's cross-sectional area and cable will never be referred to by its diameter alone.Įxpressed as the number of conductors of a given diameter. You will sometimes see cable described as 1mm or 2mm cable without the ² sign but it is important to note that this does not mean the diameter of the cable. The same applies when crimping the conductor to a terminal - make sure all strands are contained within the crimp or the current carrying capacity will be reduced.Ĭables are generally specified using the following properties: PropertyĮxpressed in mm² and describes the tota l cross sectional area of the copper conductor. This will reduce the total cross-sectional area of the conductor at that point and consequently also reduce the current carrying capacity of the cable. Tip : Be careful when stripping the insulation from a stranded cable that you don't accidentally remove any of the copper strands. The difference in cross sections is shown in the diagram below: This type of cable is (unsurprisingly) known as 'stranded' cable and provides much more flexibility, which means improved resistance to work hardening making it better suited to use in vehicles. This problem is overcome by manufacturing the core from many small diameter strands of copper wire to make up the desired cross-sectional area, rather than using a single wire. This work hardening causes the metal to become more brittle which could, over a long period of time, cause a stiff, solid conductor to crack and fail. The reason for this is that copper, although quite ductile, is susceptible to 'work hardening' when subject to vibration and mechanical shock, such as is experienced when installed in a vehicle. You will have noticed that cable used in vehicle electrical systems is very flexible in contrast to the cable you would find in the the walls of your home, which is fairly stiff. ![]() ![]() ![]() I called a week in advance and confirmed all were together. The sites are packed on top of each other and have no picnic tables for eating outside. The facilities.entrance and exits have no room for big rigs during check in and check out. ![]() Talking to several of the campers that were staying for only a short time, they shared similar experiences with the impatience demonstrated. Given the tight quarters, you have to wait in line to get out on the one lane road. ![]() Many of snow birds are rude, rude, rude with none of that patience demonstrated typically with RVers. This makes it very difficult to tow around. RVs are so tight in the sites, there is nowhere to park cars, resulting in cars and trucks being parked in the road. That left everyone waiting hot-tempered as those in the front were trying to check out with a slow staff. The staff at check out was slow and unorganized, resulting in a line of rigs trying to get out of the park with only one lane open because they allowed cars to park in the second lane. The pool was nasty so there was no place to swim. As far as facilities goes, the only way to access the wifi was at the Rex center, so there was no wifi signal to connect to at your sites. There was no where to turn around so we had to back a fifth wheel all the way out. Then when we arrived in the fifth wheel, the staff sent us to the end of a cul de sac to a site that was meant for Class As as a pull in site. When we arrived, they had us spread all over the park because people that we in the sites reserved for us wanted to stay longer, so the staff let them. We made reservations 9 months in advance and asked for the three rigs to be together. We were one of three rigs traveling together, two Class As and one 41' fifth wheel. This is the worst RV park we have ever stayed in, from the staff on site to the facilities to the reservation keeping. ![]() ![]() ![]() With Mallory Alexander International Logistics, Old Dominion does international shipping throughout the Caribbean, Europe, the Far East, Central America, and South America. ![]() These handles are so clean and classic looking. Each handle has two screws that insert from inside the cabinet. To remedy this I would use a small utility knife to carefully cut the excess material away, leaving a flat clean hole for the hardware.Īnd now, the best part – attaching the new handles. Once your holes are drilled, peel off the tape.īecause these drawers are IKEA and are a particle board type material with a thick plastic-type coating on top, as I drilled the coating tended to leave a little behind: The tape is only there to mark on with your pencil so you don’t draw all over your cabinets. I used a drill bit that was the same size as the directions that came with the hardware said to use. Now my drill bit will have a center spot to sink into ensuring my hole is exactly center. Before drilling I used a small nail and a hammer and gently tapped the nail exactly into the center of where I want to drill. I’ve installed hardware before and I feel like the drill bit slips a little sometimes and makes your hole off-center. Next, here’s a little trick I came up with. ![]() This way they are level with the top of the drawer, not the floor. To make sure they were level, I actually didn’t use a level – I measured down from the top of each drawer. Then I marked exactly where each screw hole needed to be drilled. Using a flexible tape measure for sewing ( like this one), I marked the center of the drawer on the tape with a pencil. I placed the tape in the general area that I wanted the handle. I started by using some Frog Tape for delicate surfaces. So how did I install them? I chose a method that takes a little longer than using a template, but I feel that by doing so I made sure that each and every handle was 100% perfect. I feel like choosing a variety of sizes of handles as well as centering the handles on the drawers makes the kitchen look and feel even more custom. I don’t regret a single handle placement. Also, I opted for the long handles on the pantry doors and I can honestly say that I love the placement of them. The main feet-opening drawers are the pantry drawers (below). In retrospect I’m glad I did it this way because my kids prefer to open the drawers with their feet! If I had installed the handles at the top of each drawer I feel like it would have compromised the integrity of the drawer over time. I love the look of the hardware sitting in the center of a drawer. In the end I installed them horizontally at the top of the drawer and am happy with this decision.Īll of our lower drawers I installed the hardware dead-center. I wanted to install them a little lower, but the width of the handle didn’t work well. The pull-out spice racks were tricky and I went back and forth on them for quite awhile. For shorter uppers or narrow drawers I opted for the shorter handle. For any tall upper cabinets or wide lower drawers, I chose the longer handle. Instead of choosing a one-size-fits-all approach, I opted for different sizes of handles depending on the door size and style. I feel like it softens up the hardware just a bit. Did you know you can install it with or without the little round washers on the ends? It totally changes the look depending on if you install with or without those washers. I love the color, texture, and versatility of this hardware. They have come a long way in their hardware department. It also comes in two lengths 5 5/8″ and 13 3/16″. It’s called Bagganas and comes in a few colors black, stainless steel, and gold. I shopped around for other options, but I really fell in love with this hardware from IKEA. ![]() Our hardware is from IKEA (surprise, surprise!). Are you ready for more IKEA kitchen posts?
